The Hidden Causes of Chronic Pain: Lyme Disease, Mould Toxicity & Fibromyalgia

Why pain isn't always "just fibromyalgia" and the tools that helped me reclaim my life.

For years, pain was my constant companion. Not the occasional ache after exercise or stiffness from sitting too long. I'm talking about the kind of pain that wakes you in the middle of the night, that makes getting dressed feel exhausting, that leaves you wondering how your body can hurt so much when all your blood tests come back "normal."

After being bitten by ticks and later discovering I had significant mould exposure, my health began to unravel in ways I couldn't explain. Like many people living with chronic illness, I was eventually given labels like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and anxiety. But deep down, I knew there had to be more to the story.

When Pain Becomes Your Normal

One of the hardest parts of chronic pain is that it's invisible. People see you looking fine on the outside while you're silently battling muscle aches, joint pain, morning stiffness, burning sensations, migrating pain, headaches, fatigue, brain fog and sensitivity to foods, chemicals and stress.

Many people with Lyme disease, mould illness, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), chronic fatigue syndrome and other complex chronic illnesses experience these symptoms every day. In my case, the pain wasn't simply a problem with my muscles or joints. It was a sign that my body was overwhelmed.

What I Learned About Lyme, Mould and Chronic Pain

One of the most eye-opening discoveries in my healing was understanding how mould toxicity can affect the nervous system and immune system. Research and clinical experience from many integrative practitioners suggest that mould exposure may contribute to increased inflammation, immune dysregulation, mast cell activation, mitochondrial dysfunction and heightened sensitivity to pain.

Many practitioners also observe that mould and Lyme disease often occur together. When the body is dealing with chronic infections, environmental toxins and a stressed nervous system simultaneously, pain can become amplified. It's like having multiple alarms going off at once.

Why Some People Seem More Susceptible

Not everyone exposed to mould develops chronic illness. Some people appear to have genetic variations that reduce their ability to process toxins efficiently.

In my case, I discovered I carry two variants worth knowing about.

HLA-DR genes have been associated with difficulty clearing certain biotoxins, including mould toxins. MTHFR variants can influence methylation pathways, which play an important role in detoxification and cellular repair.

While genes are never the whole story, understanding them helped me realise why my body seemed to react so strongly to environmental stressors.

The Missing Piece: Calming the Nervous System

One of the biggest breakthroughs in my recovery wasn't another supplement. It was learning that chronic pain is often connected to a dysregulated nervous system.

When the body becomes stuck in fight-or-flight mode, pain signals can become amplified. Stress, trauma, chronic infections, toxins and ongoing inflammation all contribute. This is why healing often requires more than treating symptoms. We need to help the body feel safe again.

My Personal Pain Relief Toolkit

There's no magic bullet. Healing has come from consistent daily practices that support my body rather than fight against it. These are the tools that have helped me most.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been one of my favourite therapies for reducing pain, calming my nervous system and supporting overall wellbeing. Many people report improvements in pain levels, sleep quality and stress resilience.

Anti-Inflammatory Eating

Food can either fuel inflammation or help calm it. I focus on real whole foods, plenty of vegetables, good-quality protein, healthy fats and gluten-free eating. I also pay close attention to foods that trigger inflammation for me personally, because that part is always individual.

Infrared Sauna

I use an infrared sauna four to five times each week. It helps with muscle tension, circulation, sweating, relaxation and recovery. It's become one of my favourite daily rituals.

Epsom Salt Baths

A warm bath with Epsom salts can be incredibly soothing when pain flares. It's simple, affordable and helps me unwind both physically and emotionally.

Essential Oils

Depending on what my body needs, I use essential oils to support relaxation, reduce tension and create a calming environment. Nothing fancy, just a consistent part of my wind-down routine.

Castor Oil Packs

Castor oil packs are one of my favourite detox and lymphatic support practices. Many people find they help promote relaxation and support healthy elimination pathways.

Pilates and Yoga

Movement matters. The key is finding movement that nourishes rather than exhausts the body. Pilates and yoga help me improve mobility, support posture, reduce stiffness, strengthen my body gently and calm my nervous system.

Massage Gun and Home Bodywork

When muscles become tight and painful, I use a massage gun at home to improve circulation and release tension. Combined with stretching and movement, it makes a real difference on the hard days.

Don't Forget the Foundations

Detoxification doesn't begin with supplements. It begins with supporting the body's natural elimination pathways, including the liver, lymphatic system, gut, kidneys and skin. Before chasing the next treatment or protocol, make sure these foundations are working well.

What I'd Tell Anyone Living with Chronic Pain

Look beyond the label. Fibromyalgia is a real diagnosis, but sometimes it describes symptoms rather than identifying root causes. Ask why the pain is happening.

Consider environmental factors. Mould exposure, water-damaged buildings and other environmental toxins are often overlooked contributors to chronic illness.

Support your nervous system daily. Breathwork, meditation, gentle movement, humming, singing, time in nature and restorative practices all matter more than most people realise.

Focus on progress, not perfection. Healing isn't linear. Some days are easier than others. Every small win counts.

Build your own toolkit. The goal isn't finding one miracle treatment. It's finding the combination of tools that work for your unique body.

The Question That Changed Everything

If you're living with chronic pain, know this: just because your symptoms are common doesn't mean they're normal. Your body is communicating something.

For me, healing began when I stopped asking "how do I get rid of this pain?" and started asking "what is my body trying to tell me?" That question led me to Lyme disease, mould toxicity, nervous system dysregulation and ultimately a much deeper understanding of my own health.

Today I still prioritise the practices that support my body every day. Not because I'm chasing perfection, but because I've learned that healing happens when we work with our bodies rather than against them.
